Friday Wonder Ponder #4

It's Friday, Friday gettin' down on Friday - everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend...

I love that song.

And speaking of the things we love: I've always found it fascinating to discover people's passions. More so, when they were a child. When I was a kid, I loved watching Thundercats and playing Super Mario on Nintendo - still do! But my most favorite thing of all time was catching and raising river fish.

Mom and Dad had a plot of land with a farm-esq quality about it: lush Pomerac (Mountain apple, Malay apple) trees grew on almost every inch; green grass as far as the eye can see; and we had chickens, goats, dogs, cats, wild opossums, a cow and a very creepy brown owl that lived in the roof. Another feature was the river that sat just below our backyard (yes, we had our own private river - cool, huh?). Everyday, me and my best friend Whitney would take old tin cans, tie a string around the mouth and place crumbs of bread inside. We would then place it in the water to set and when the fish came for the bait...WHAKA! Twenty or so fishies with bodies as colorful as a rainbow.

Ah yes...to be young and full of fun.

Of course we caught catfish, eels and coral snakes, too - yes we knew they were HIGHLY poisonous, and, no, we were never bitten - but those were seldom and required a lot of waiting and setting to get them; thing is: they are not only big, but very aggressive - and they can leap really high.

I miss that river. To this very day I still think about fishing. I quite enjoyed it and I'd rather do that than go mountain biking, playing rugby, ATV racing, hiking and partying anyday!

So, today I want you to share some childhood memories. What were the things you loved to do as a kid?

Golf and baseball occupied much of my youth along with using broken golf club shafts to practice my masterful swordplay.
The smell of fresh cut grass mingling with the leather of my mitt before the windup was absolute heaven to me. Even fleeting whiffs of anything remotely resembling that smell still gives me vivid flashbacks to those wonderful days out in the sun.

With this alone you painted a picture of your personality. You're a suave and sophisticated guy. And you're bespectacled - even better!

I'm not a fan of baseball or golf, but, hey, I'm a fast learner and I just might challenge you to a game someday.

What do ya say? :D

Spectacles ftw!
And i'm so down! I may have to try my hand at rugby sometime as well

as for suave and sophisticated... eh well maybe my prose is, but beyond that, not so much :P

Oh stop being coy and embrace your awesomeness!

It's okay to be the epitome of suave, and you surely are. Embrace it, my friend.

P.S. You won't beat me at Rugby. I'm 6' 1" and i just added five pounds to my sturdy 170 pound frame.

I'll destroy you! :D

Coy is how I roll.
And sadly, I'm 6'1" and 220. Sturdy like a wall

I liked playing Dungeons and Dragons, playing video games, and reading books.

CB - Pfft, 220 pounds of fat! (LOL)Sturdy? More like cushiony. :D

Michael - I liked D&D but migrated to Magic the Gatherng. Sadly, I no longer have my deck. I loved Sliver Overlord and World Gorger Dragon.

Hah oh i'm not sayin the cushion isn't there, but if I were to get into legit shape, the lowest I could safely go is around 200... I powerlifted through high school

That sounds like so much fun, though terrifying (I'm dead scared of snakes).

There were little sidewalk stalls near my elementary school, and my friends and I would also go there to buy snacks and hang out. I missed it.

It's not at all scary Emy. Sure, eels and Coral snakes are deadly, but that's what makes it exciting - like juggling a grenade, hoping it won't fall.

I remember my sidewalk stalls. I once bought a baby cayman from the man and my mom threw a fit. I wanted to keep it.

I still miss that lil' dude. :D

I am the same Jenn Rush! :)

Thundercats. I loved that show. I remember telling my best friend back then that I could transport us through the TV into Thundercats Land using my magical book (it was an old bible). I'm sure he was quite disappointed when I couldn't follow through.

On a serious note, I used to love building tree forts. :)

I'm glad it's you. Do you know how long I've been searching? I finally found you today after I remembered you were a Blue Boarder.

Congrats on the Book! It sounds really awesome.

Hope you stop by again. :D

Well, I am glad you kept looking! I found my way to your blog through the blue board, too.

I will definitely drop in again! I loved your post on punctuation.

:D

Thanks. I love your avatar, if that's you you're really, really pretty! :d

I also love your blog - so fancy!

Have a wonderful weekend. :D

Jenn Rush said...

You are making me blush!

Yes, that is me in the pic. Though I have to wonder if perhaps the photoshopping made the pretty and not me. But I will take the compliment! And I'm not giving it back.

Is that really you in your avatar? ;D

T.D. McFrost said...

I mean what I say, and you are a knockout! I doubt the picture did that - god did!

Yup, that's me. I need a new one, though. I took that pic for a magazine my friend was supposed to release. Never did. Well, at least I got a nice head shot. :D

Jenn Rush said...

Yes, you certainly did. :P

Happy weekend, T. D.

From the age of three I had paper, pencils, crayons, in hand. I always knew I'd be an artist. To this day when I see what new outrageously cool things Crayola comes out with I want!

So now I use my artistic talents to illustrate my prose. It is a wonderful thing to know I can create the image I write about.

Happy Weekend Michael! :D

I loved Crayola too. I used to write on my mom's walls with those crayons. HA! She used to hold her head and shake it every time I did. At the time, I didn't know it was wrong, so I'm sorry mom. :D

Ah,

I can see you doing that ... giving your mom the cheesy grin and the big cow eyes. Mmischievous, even back then. LOL
