Women In Fiction: My Favorite Heroine

Isn't he purrrty?

Before I start, I want to say thank you to Hope Roberson and all the gorgeous gals over at Falling for Fiction for selecting me as one of their winners for their Hookers and Hangers Blogfest. You have no idea how much this means to me, so lots of love to you. <3

I've read a few YA this year: Legend by Marie Lu, Divergent, Paranormalcy, Crescendo, First Step 2 Forever by Justin Bieber...ya know, real "hard" stuff. (LOL) And one thing all these novels have in common are strong female characters, and that includes Justin Bieber. Ack, I'm kidding, I'm kidding--he's a boy not a lady, right? Okay, I'll stop now. ^_^

Anyway, my favorite female heroine is Her--bet you thought I was going to say Hermoine, huh? Well, I kinda was but I'm a lot more read than you think I am.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

This brings back memories. I read this when I was fifteen and it was completely by choice. One of my best friends was doing a play about her and got me interested in the character and the book. I admired Jane because she overcame her horrible childhood (orphaned as a baby) to become a prominent figure in society--the governess of Thornfield. She maintained conviction throughout the novel, and always remained positive despite all her misfortunes. At a time when women's options were limited, Jane Eyre managed to independently establish a comfortable living for herself. She also rejected Mr. Rochester despite loving him when she believed that he had committed a misdeed, proving her courage and strength.

This is my pick for best female heroine in a novel. There are so many other magnificent women to choose from in the grand multiverse of literature. Who's your favorite?

I want to make it clear that I like Justin Bieber and all that he stands for. He is a really nice dude and inspires so many to aspire and never say never.

Bieberfever! :D

I like a quirky character from a bestselling Anne Tyler novel, Rebecca Davitch.

I like Bieber, too.

I think I like the ones I create the best. Because if I don't, who will?

I haven't ready the Brontes or Jane Austen or any of that. I guess if I have to choose from another book, my favorite growing up would be Eilowyn (probably not spelling it right) from the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. There was someone who always knew her own mind. Kind of like Princess Leia before Star Wars even existed.

Everyone picks on Bieber. Poor Bieber. But he has millions and gazillions so I think he's fair game. Ciao

when it comes to Bronte sisters, my fave is WUTHERING HEIGHTS, probably the only book from that period that I consider a serious literature thanks to great psychological development of the characters. Most other English literature books from that age cannot beat even the weakest of Russian, French or German books, and I say that as a professor of English literature :)

Congrats on winning Hookers and Hangers.

It's hard to pic one favorite heroine. When I was a kid, it was probably Alanna from Pierce's Lioness series.

Now, it would be a toss up between Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice and Dagny Taggert from Atlas Shrugged.

That is a good pick. Never liked the book much, but Jane Eyre is definitely an admirable character. If I was going with classics, I'd say Elinor from Sense and Sensibility. For more recent, I might pick someone awesome and often overlooked, like Professor McGonagall.

Hey, T.D.

Been out of the loop forever, but now I strayed from the sandy beaches of Florida, and back home in Chi town, blogging again.

Missed you buddy....

Congrats on the win! Awesome.

I am very impressed by your choice of female heroines... Jane Eyre is ONE AMAZING story and Jane is what a woman should be, smart, strong, caring, determined, and has a mind of her own.

Hope all is well in Frostland.... drop by my blog to say hi, when you get a chance ... I'd love to see you. If you want a good laugh, my present What if twisted fairytale is up... I think you'll appreciate it.
